![]() The central story is an adaptation of the seminal 1988 DC comics. It allows fans to choose where the story goes through navigation guided by the viewer's remote control. Oh, and major spoilers: The fact that we got a version of Zur-En-Arrh Batman in an animated movie definitely made my week.Batman: Death in the Family represents the first-of-its-kind adaptation for Warner Bros.' DC animated features as they take a stab at interactive storytelling, not unlike Netflix has done with experiments like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. If you like Batman and were ever gonna buy one of these things on blu-ray, let it be this one. But this one, though far from traditional, actually has a pretty cool story to tell and puts it right in the viewer's hands. TL DR: We get a lot of bleh movies from DC's direct-to-video line. There's also a lot of fun DC cameos to keep things interesting if you explore the different paths. Every branching is creative and thought-provoking. We don't get enough adaptations actually dealing with the relationships between these people and it's great to get a look into the heads of the Batfamily. Every path has something to say about Bruce, Jason, or the family itself. Besides "Robin Dies," there's two other branchings: "Robin Cheats Death" and "Batman Saves Robin." The former only has one path that you watch straight through, while the latter has literally six branches of its own and five endings. I'll say that the rest of the film is weirdly structured. ![]() Oh, and actually getting to hear Bruce call his kids 'son'? More of that please, DC. Hearing Bruce Wayne talk about his faults and the emotional impact the events of that movie had on him is done incredibly well. For me, it has cemented the fact that Bruce Greenwood is one of the best Batman VAs. Even if you just take the 'normal' path that digital viewers got stuck with-which is just an abridged retelling of Under the Red Hood narrated by Bruce-it's still really good. This guy gets these characters, and that's what makes the film work. This movie was written and directed by Brandon Vietti, the genius behind the original Under the Red Hood movie as well as half the genius behind Young Justice (which I think everyone would agree is one of the better DC Comics adaptations). There's some really good Batman storytelling here. It saddens me that a lot of people got stuck with this raw deal since I don't want those who haven't bought the film yet to get the wrong idea. As far as I understand things, it looks like a lot of people bought the digital version of the movie-not realizing the interactive feature was absent-and got forced into one path. I went in with low expectations after I saw the kind of feedback the film was getting over here. Set in the continuity of the Batman: Under the Red Hood movie from 2010, it allows viewers to choose whether Jason lives or dies and the various branches that follow. Last Tuesday, DC released Batman: Death In The Family, a collection of animated shorts that primarily features an interactive version of the classic Jason Todd death story.
